24. San Diego State (4-2)

Even after what transpired this past week, San Diego State has already shown that they are one of the best mid-majors in college basketball this season. The Aztecs have been outstanding on the defensive end in recent years, while the offense has really stood out in recent days as well.

The Maui Invitational was a chance for the Aztecs to prove they belong, and they started off hot with an 88-77 win over Ohio State on Monday night. A balanced offensive attack saw Matt Bradley score 18 points while 15-point efforts from Lamont Butler and Micah Parrish helped key the win. The following day, the Aztecs came up short, dropping a tough 87-70 contest to #14 Arizona, even with Darrion Trammell’s 21-point outing. Unfortunately, the Aztecs blew an early lead and lost 78-74 in overtime to #9 Arkansas in their final game, wasting an opportunity for their biggest win of the early season.

Some may argue that the Aztecs don’t deserve to be ranked after dropping those back-to-back games, but the performances came against two top-level teams in the nation. The Aztecs are still a deep and strong lineup that certainly looks like the cream of the crop in the Mountain West. Even after these losses, San Diego State is going to get back on track, getting home games against UC Irvine and Occidental this upcoming week.
