NCAA Basketball: Ranking the final 10 unbeaten teams for 2022-23 season
By Joey Loose
1. Houston
The nation’s top-ranked team remains unbeaten and has looked impressive. The Cougars sit 9-0, have taken care of their business, and have looked the part as perhaps Kelvin Sampson’s best team ever. That’s big talk after this program went to the Final Four just two seasons ago.
They haven’t played the toughest schedule, but they’ve looked dominant despite the level of opposition. They picked up a double-digit road win at Oregon and have a nice win over Saint Mary’s in a defensive slugfest. Houston hasn’t given up more than 56 points in any of their first nine games, with very impressive work all over the court, especially limiting long-range success.
Marcus Sasser has been as advertised, with both him and Tramon Mark bouncing back impressively from injuries that ended their seasons last year prematurely. Freshman Jarace Walker has been a welcome addition for the Cougars while J’Wan Roberts has been a dominant force in the frontcourt. Everything’s coming together for this Houston team, who hopes to avoid the horrific injury bug that plagued them last year but didn’t stop another fantastic season.
Some intriguing matchups lie ahead for the Cougars, who’ll host Alabama this Saturday before heading to Virginia next Saturday. If they win both of those contests, they might finish the regular season undefeated. It’s certainly possible to drop one of these AAC games on the road, like to a Memphis or Cincinnati, but this squad is a few heads above the rest of their conference foes. Sasser is looking like an All-American and Sampson’s squad may stay #1 for quite some time if they knock off the Crimson Tide and can upend the Cavaliers.
We’ve looked closely at the last ten unbeaten college basketball programs; who do you think is going to be the last unbeaten and who is most set up for further success?
