NCAA Basketball: Ranking the final 10 unbeaten teams for 2022-23 season
By Joey Loose
4. Connecticut
Is Connecticut back? While this program may not be back to the level of prominence when they won four national championships in a sixteen-year span, Dan Hurley’s squad has looked like one of the nation’s elite teams during this 9-0 start.
The Huskies’ season started with five wins over mid-major foes, but a trip to Portland for the Phil Knight Invitational certainly elevated things. Connecticut got wins over Oregon, Alabama, and Iowa State in a four-day span to win the event before knocking off Oklahoma State four days later. All four of those wins over power conference foes came by double-digits, with the victory over a ranked Crimson Tide squad clearly the most impressive.
Returning big man Adama Sanogo (18.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg) has been the centerpiece of their success but he’s far from being the only talent for the Huskies. East Carolina transfer Tristen Newton (11.4 ppg) has been an essential addition, while freshman Alex Karaban has shown flashes of brilliance for the Huskies so far this season. This team has been getting it done on both offense and defense in recent weeks,, even if the interior offense was lacking against the Cowboys in their most recent outing.
A road trip to Florida could lead the Huskies to their first loss of the season, as could a trip to Butler a week and a half later. As things currently stand, the Huskies will likely be in a fight with Creighton for Big East supremacy and it would be pretty surprising to see any other teams surpass these two in the race. It’s likely that the Huskies will lose a few of these tough road games during Big East play, but it’s impossible to deny that this program looks impressive already.
