Big Ten Basketball: Wisconsin rises, Indiana falls in latest power rankings
5. Maryland Terrapins – 8-2 (1-0)
The Terrapins were off to a strong 8-0 start on the season that included victories over Miami, Saint Louis, and Illinois. They finally found some roadblocks, losing the past two games to Wisconsin and Tennessee by a combined nine points. They were down by around 20 points to the Vols but made a late comeback to nearly get the upset.
It was an offensive setback for Maryland, scoring its two lowest games of the season. Everyone struggled outside of Jahmir Young, who averaged 17.5 ppg in the past week and now leads the team with 15.6 ppg and 3.4 apg. It doesn’t take away from the strong starts that both Donta Scott and Julian Reese had but in order for the team to succeed in league play, they’ll need them to come through in league play.
The schedule remains unfavorable for Maryland going forward, with a matchup against UCLA coming up this weekend, staring down a three-game losing streak potentially. And after home games against UMBC and Saint Peter’s to round out conference play, the Terrapins go back to Big Ten Basketball play with 3 of 4 games on the road. It’s a good thing they got that Illinois victory to allow them some margin of error in January.
