North Carolina’s Christmas wish: A shooting coach for Davis and Love

From No. 1 in the country to unranked in what seems like a blink of an eye, the North Carolina Tar Heels are in need of a few gifts from Santa but one, in particular, stands out to me. The years in which UNC is successful, like last season seem to coincide with a good year shooting the three ball. The three-point shot hasn’t been a big part of the Tar Heels’ arsenal with just 26% of their point production coming from beyond the arc over the last three years.

When you look over the past 20 years every year UNC has reached the final four or beyond they have shot at least 35% from deep, with the exception of 2017 when they shot 32%. This season the percentages have taken a nose dive for Hubert Davis’ crew with them shooting 30%.

This is mostly about Caleb Love and RJ Davis who have attempted the most threes on the team (139) but have shot just 29%. Davis has yet to make more than two in a game, and even in the four games, he has made two he is shooting just 8-23. Love had his best shooting game of the season against The Citadel going 4-6 to bring his season average to 33%. But, during the team’s four-game losing streak he struggled from deep shooting 8-30. If the Tar Heels are going to rebound to near preseason projections, Davis and Love are going to need some of that 2021-22 shooting touch in their stockings.
