NCAA Basketball Takeaways: UNC, Gonzaga, Houston and UCLA all get major wins
7. Purdue needed all 40 minutes to get past Davidson
Due to how many great games there were on Saturday, No. 1 Purdue taking on Davidson flew under the radar. But it was a nice family reunion for freshman Fletcher Loyer of the Boilermakers and Foster Loyer, star of the Wildcats. Davidson isn’t a great team this season after losing its head coach and two star forwards from the year prior but historically, have always given power conference opponents fits.
That happened this time around, with Davidson staying close the whole time and staying within range. Unfortunately for them, they weren’t able to survive one last push in the final minutes of Purdue and the frontcourt of Zach Edey and Caleb Furst. The Boilermakers prevailed, 69-61, led by 29 points and 16 rebounds from the star center. Both Furst and Braden Smith had double-doubles as well.
Purdue remains unbeaten and will be No. 1 once again when the next AP top-25 poll comes out but after a dominating first month of the season, they’ve struggled to put away the likes of both Davidson and Nebraska. The freshmen guards have seen to hit a wall, shooting poorly from the field. When that happens, they’ve been vulnerable in Big Ten play.
