NCAA Basketball: 2022-23 Christmas wishlist for each top 25 team
22. Miami Hurricanes – A healthy and effective Nijel Pack
Things have gone well for the Hurricanes from a personnel standpoint. Arkansas State transfer Norchad Omier is doing even better than expected moving up to the power conference level, while forward Jordan Miller is having a breakout campaign of his own. And after averaging nearly 30 ppg in his last four games, Isaiah Wong now leads the team with nearly 18 ppg. The only thing missing is Nijel Pack, the transfer from Kansas State who is averaging 11.2 ppg and 2.8 apg at under 40% shooting from the field.
Pack has dealt with sickness and injuries but to this point, he’s been playing second fiddle in the offense. Miami has real potential thanks to the others and if the former Kansas State guard can get back to last year’s level, this team can win the ACC.
21. Virginia Tech Hokies – Getting Rodney Rice back soon
Despite just losing to Boston College on the road, the Hokies are still a contender in the ACC and in position to make the NCAA Tournament. Justyn Mutts is playing at an All-ACC level, while guards Sean Pedulla and Hunter Cattoor have been great. The concern with this team is a lack of scoring depth, especially from the bench. If MJ Collins (3.7 ppg) gives them nothing then all the pressure is on the starters to produce.
There’s help on the way at least, with Rodney Rice reportedly practicing after dealing with an offseason injury. He’s a top-50 freshman prospect and a wing, a position of need for Virginia Tech. His pending return will be a massive boost if he’s as good as advertised.
