23. Maryland Terrapins

The Terps had to lick its wounds after the three-game losing streak to UCLA, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. None of them were bad defeats on their own but it did take the luster off of what was a strong opening first year for head coach Kevin Willard.

The good news is that they were able to enter Christmas with a win over Saint Peter’s, 75-45. Maryland shot over 50% from the field and held the Peacocks to just over 30% overall, with Hakim Hart leading all scorers with 20 points on 7/8 shooting from the field. Forward Patrick Emilien, who got his first start of the season in this game, chipped in with 10 points in 26 minutes on 4/6 shooting. The 75 points scored was the most for the team since the 79-54 road win at Louisville a month ago.

The Terrapins might not be a top-15 team but they’ve shown that they’ll be more than competitive in Big Ten play, which will come after a home matchup against UMBC to conclude the non-conference. Three of the first four league games are on the road, including against Michigan and Rutgers in the first week of the new year.
