20. Marquette Golden Eagles

One of the top games of last week was Marquette’s double-overtime defeat to Providence, 103-98. Five players had at least 20 points, including Tylek Kolek’s 29 points and five steals, along with 24 from Kameron Jones. The loss was No. 4 for the Eagles and ended a three-game win streak but none of the previous defeats would be considered bad in any way.

Kolek had a career-high scoring performance but he’s in the top 5 in NCAA Basketball in assists at 7.5 apg, including multiple occasions of at least 11 assists. There are four other Golden Eagle players scoring in double figures on the season, led by sophomore guard Kameron Jones with 16.4 ppg. As a whole, the offense has taken a nice leap, ranking in the top 25 overall in field goal shooting at 49%. Marquette ranks No. 6 inside the arc at 60% overall, with starting center Oso Ighodaro (11.3 ppg) making 65% from the field.

The Golden Eagles have an important stretch coming up in Big East play, starting this week with matchups against Seton Hall and Villanova. This is a team that has the talent to be an NCAA Tournament team but the resume is a little light at the moment. Going 2-0 to have a 3-1 league record would be very helpful entering the new year.
