NCAA Basketball: 10 most shocking disappointments in 2022-23 season
8. Stanford Cardinal – 5-7 (0-2)
When the Cardinal got former five-star prospect, Harrison Ingram, to come back for another year and landed the program’s first-ever transfer in a sharpshooter in Michael Jones, this was as good a time as ever for Coach Haase to have them in contention for the NCAA Tournament. Instead, the team is under .500 and has lost to every single decent team they’ve played on the schedule.
Ingram has actually regressed, averaging fewer than 10 ppg and shooting under 40% from the field. No one is scoring more than 11.0 ppg and being the leading offensive option and the defense is just okay. The next few weeks are against the bottom of the Pac-12 but at this point, all of them seem like losable games for Stanford.
7. Texas A&M Aggies – 7-5
After making a huge run to nearly make the NCAA Tournament last season, the Aggies were supposed to be in contention, at least once SEC play came. But losses to Wofford, Murray State, and Boise State have them way behind, with no legit win to speak of. Wade Taylor IV (15.9 ppg and 3.7 apg) has been a breakout sophomore player and Tyrece Radford is in double figures again.
Yet the problem is the defense. Despite adding AAC Defensive Player of the Year Dexter Dennis and Michigan State forward Julis Marble, the team has gotten worse on that end. And they don’t have the offense to offset that letdown. Unless this team returns to being a top-25 caliber unit on that end, Texas A&M runs the risk of finishing in the bottom tier of the SEC.
