Each of our teams will be listed alphabetically and we’ll reveal our midseason player of the year in this section.

OVC Basketball 1st-Team

Jr Clay – Tennessee State Tigers – Guard

Clay is one of the most decorated players in OVC history. The Tennessee Tech transfer has landed on four-straight all-conference teams. During his fifth (covid) collegiate season he is second in scoring (16.4 ppg) and leads the league in assists (4.6). Clay has amassed over 1,800 points, 250 steals, 225 three-pointers, and 500 assists. He is one of the most complete players in OVC history. Tennessee State (8-5) was picked second in the OVC preseason poll.

Marcus Fitzgerald – Tennessee State Tigers – Guard

Fitzgerald is our second Tiger on the midseason team. The 6’ sophomore is a constant offensive threat. TSU is the OVC’s second-highest scoring team and Fitzgerald is one of three double-digit scorers. Fitzgerald averages 14.3 points per game and his 3.5 assists per game are good for sixth in the league, and he dominates from the free-throw line (.846). During his two-plus seasons, he has amassed 701 points.

Myron Gardner – Little Rock Trojans – Forward

Gardner was the league’s week two player of the week and is the conference’s second-leading rebounder (9.5 per game). The 6’5 senior was limited to 16 games last season and was nowhere to be found on the preseason all-league team. Gardner leads LR (4-9) in scoring (13.3 ppg) and minutes played. He is fourth in the OVC with 1.8 steals per contest and ranks among its leaders in free-throw and three-point percentages.

Phillip Russell – Southeast Missouri Redhawks – Guard

Russell was a second-teamer last season and was named to the preseason all-league list. He has not been disappointed during his sophomore season. Kobe Clark’s high school teammate is having a breakout season. He the OVC’s third-leading scorer (16.2), second-best dime distributor (4.5), fifth in made three-pointers, never misses a free-throw (.868), and is an efficient ball-handler. Russell owns four of the Redhawks’ five twenty-point performances.

Parker Stewart – UT Martin Skyhawks – Guard

Stewart’s return to UT Martin and the Ohio Valley Conference has been successful. He is the league leader in scoring (17.4 ppg) and made three-pointers. Stewart is among the conference leaders in rebounding (4.6), free-throw percentage (.791), steals (1.7), three-point percentage (.436). The Skyhawks (8-5) have won four straight games and five of their last six and during that streak, Stewart has topped the twenty-point mark four times and went for 34 points during a win over McNeese State.

Stewart is our midseason player of the year.
