NCAA Basketball: Top 25 impact transfers midway through 2022-23 season
4. Ricky Council IV – Arkansas Razorbacks
2022-23 stats: 18.3 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.8 apg
The former AAC 6th Man of the Year at Wichita State has barely seen the bench with the Razorbacks, averaging 35 mpg while leading them in scoring. The 6’6 guard had 15+ points in the first eight games of the year, including 24 against Creighton and 19 versus San Diego State. His season-high came with 26 points in a victory over Oklahoma as well.
With freshman guard Nick Smith only playing four games and forward Trevon Brazile out for the season, that’s at least 20 ppg in scoring that Arkansas is missing. So having a veteran in Council play as well as he has, has kept the team viable heading into SEC play.
3. Souley Boum – Xavier Musketeers
2022-23 stats: 17.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 4.6 apg
After averaging around 19 ppg in the past two years at UTEP, Boum has proved that his scoring ability can translate anywhere. He has six games of at least 20 points, including 22 points in a win over Florida, as well as 28 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in a road victory over Georgetown. Boum is currently shooting 50% from three-point range and has been a quality playmaker for others, having at least six assists in 6 of the last 7 games.
New coach Sean Miller knew what he had with the frontcourt duo of Zach Freemantle and Jack Nunge and Colby Jones is one of the most versatile players in NCAA Basketball. But point guard was the one position of question heading into the season. Boum has played incredibly well and solidified that spot, leading the team with an 11-3 record and 3-0 in Big East play.
