NCAA Basketball: Top 25 impact transfers midway through 2022-23 season
20. Jarkel Joiner – NC State Wolfpack
2022-23 stats: 16.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 3.3 apg
The 6th-year senior is a proven double-digit scorer but so far, Joiner is producing career-high numbers across the board. The 6’1 guard already has four games of at least 26 points, including 27 in a win over Dayton and 29 against Coppin State. The guard also had 26 in a near-upset over Miami.
It was expected that star guard Terquavion Smith (17.9 ppg and 5.4 apg) would lead the offense but NC State has benefitted not only from Joiner’s consistent and high-level scoring but also his defense as well. The Wolfpack has improved overall as a team and the former Ole Miss Rebel has played a big role in that.
19. Grant Basile – Virginia Tech Hokies
2022-23 stats: 13.9 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.9 apg
The 6’9 big man was a prolific offensive weapon at Wright State but there was a definite question as to whether his scoring and potential defensive issues, would work out with the Hokies at the ACC level. So far, Basile has been great, starting 12 games and shooting 40% from three-point range on over five attempts a night. He had 30 points and 10 rebounds in the season-opening win over Delaware State and had 23 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks in a win over Dayton.
Basile isn’t going to be the best defender ever but certainly hasn’t been a problem. The fit between him and Justyn Mutts has been great and the spacing he provides has allowed guards Sean Pedulla and Hunter Catoor to excel. The Hokies are 11-2 and look like a contender, with Basile playing role in that.
