16. Sam Sessoms – Coppin State Eagles

2022-23 stats: 23.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 5.4 apg

Considering that he was an 18 ppg scorer at Binghamton, it shouldn’t be a shock that the 6’0 guard is back to being an offensive juggernaut at the mid-major level. But no one could’ve seen the 5th-year senior being in the top 5 nationally in scoring average and 1st in total points scored. He’s shooting 53% from the field and a whopping 62% from inside the arc at nearly 11 attempts a game.

Sessoms has had 15 points in every game this season, including a season-high 35 on 15/22 shooting in a win at Loyola (MD). He has so much usage with the ball that Sessoms has multiple 10-assist games as well. Considering the road-heavy non-conference slate, Coppin State has been more competitive than expected and could be the favorites in the MEAC this season. Sessoms certainly is the Player of the Year favorite in the league.

15. Grant Sherfield – Oklahoma Sooners

2022-23 stats: 18.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 3.8 apg

The transfer from Nevada is averaging roughly the same points as last year but seemingly on a much better and more cohesive team. Sherfield has been in double figures in all 12 games, including a season-high 25-point effort against Seton Hall. The 6’2 guard has also been on a scoring tear lately, scoring 20+ points in four of the last five games, including against SEC programs, Arkansas and Florida.

The shooting efficiency is likely to go down, as no one shoots 57% from three-point range like he’s done so far (35/62). But Oklahoma was in desperate need of a go-to and proven offensive option to rely on every night and they have it in Sherfield. But in a Big 12 that features a lot of tough defenses, the Sooners will need to hope that their star guard doesn’t regress much.
