10. Morris Udeze – New Mexico Lobos

2022-23 stats: 17.5 ppg and 7.4 rpg, 1.4 apg

At Wichita State, the 6’8 center was a steady player, averaging around 10 ppg and 5.0 rpg. But he’s become a sudden scoring machine with the Lobos, with four games of 20+ points. That includes a career-high 33 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Northern Colorado. Udeze is off to a good start in league play as well, producing a double-double this week in beating Colorado State.

Along with last year’s impact transfers, Jaelen House and Jamal Mashburn Jr., Udeze has played a huge part in New Mexico starting out this season 13-0, one of just three unbeaten teams in NCAA Basketball. With Graham Ike out with an injury at Wyoming, the 5th-year senior has made a case for being the best frontcourt player in the Mountain West.

9. Tyree Appleby – Wake Forest Demon Deacons

2022-23 stats: 18.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 5.3 apg

Head coach Steve Forbes has made it back-to-back years of having a breakout star transfer. It was ACC Player of the Year Alondes Williams a year ago and so far, the former Florida point guard Appleby has been playing at that same level. The 6th-year senior has five games of at least 20 points, including 32 points and five assists in a road victory at Wisconsin.

Appelby has had at least eight points in every game while shooting 43% from three-point range. And it’s not against inferior competition either, as he’s coming off an 18-point and 8-assist game last week in an upset win over Duke. He’s the best player on Wake Forest and playing at an All-ACC level.
