NCAA Basketball: 10 under-the-radar transfer impacts of 2022-23 season
Jahmir Young – Maryland Terrapins
2022-23 stats: 14.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 3.0 apg
The former star at Charlotte has solidified the point guard position with the Terrapins, playing well as both ends. Young has scored at least 17 points on five occasions, including a season-high 24 against 24 in a victory over Illinois. He also had a season-high seven assists, along with 18 points in a game against Tennessee.
Young is the leading scorer on a Maryland squad that has exceeded expectations. He’s been an upgrade over Fatts Russell so far and while some of the other starters have fallen off a bit, the senior has consistently been an offensive contributor for the 10-4 team.
Greg Elliott – Pittsburgh Panthers
2022-23 stats: 10.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 0.9 spg
Last season, Pittsburgh was one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the country. They were able to add a career 40% three-point shooter in Elliott, who was a solid bench player at Marquette. He’s started with the Panthers this season, scoring in double figures in eight out of 14 games. That includes a season-high 20 points at Vanderbilt on 6/9 shooting from deep.
So far, Elliott is making 40% of his three-point attempts, along with 88% from three-point line. His spacing has been a benefit to the Panthers and while Blake Hinson and Nelly Cummings have gotten most of the attention among the transfer portal newcomers, the 5th-year sharpshooter also deserves credit for turning the team around so far.
