Bracketology 2023: Florida Atlantic, Charleston among mid-majors to watch

Toledo Rockets at Kent State Golden Flashes

Tuesday, January 10, Kent, OH, 7:00 PM ET

The MAC is usually one of those mid-major conferences that when postseason play rolls around is a bit more unpredictable than the rest. Two of the teams who always seem to be in the mix, and should be once again, face off Tuesday night when in-state rivals Toledo and Kent State meet for the first time this season.

The Golden Flashes (12-3) were picked to finish 1st in the conference and the Rockets who enter the week 10-5 were picked 2nd. Kent State currently sits atop the conference after winning its first two games last week over Western Michigan and Miami-Ohio. Toledo enters this game after falling to Ball State and knocking off the same Western Michigan squad, so this game will help to shake out the hierarchy at the top of the conference.

Before the season started, there was talk that these two teams could be in the at-large conversion in March. Toledo began the year 3-0 including a win over fellow at-large candidate UAB but has proceeded to go just 5-4 over their next nine to ostensibly end those hopes. They had a chance to get league play started on the right foot last week but gave up 90 to a Ball State team that averages 73 per game against Division I opponents.

This game is about one of these two teams trying to announce themselves as the team to beat in the Mac, but make no mistake the Toledo Rockets need this one more.
