Gonzaga Basketball: 3 keys to beating BYU Cougars in final trip to Provo
1. Continued good play from Nolan Hickman, taking on a freshman PG
After scoring eight points combined in the first two games, it was a great performance from Hickman, who took over in the second half against Santa Clara. He’s not going to shoot 8/9 in many more games but from who is supposed to be your lead guard, those nights will be needed in close games.
Gonzaga Basketball isn’t the only team that has dealt with guard issues. BYU’s starting point guard was Coastal Carolina transfer Rudi Williams, who has had plenty of ups and downs. He’s now the team’s 6th Man, replaced by true freshman, Dallin Hall.
The former three-star guard is back from a two-year mission and has had an immediate impact, including a couple of game-winning baskets early in non-conference play. But Hall’s production has been limited to around 20 mpg, averaging 6.5 ppg and 3.5 apg (leads team).
This is a matchup for BYU to have any chance, needs Hall to at least outplay Hickman when on the court. Of course, Williams needs to be a double-digit scorer off the bench but the starting ball-handlers for both teams are capable of either 10+ or fewer than five. The easiest way to prevent an upset is for Hickman to simply keep Hall in check. A big game from either guard could have a big impact on the outcome.
