Big East Basketball power rankings: Villanova drops lower, St. John’s rises
5. Creighton Bluejays – 10-8 (4-3)
The Bluejays had one of the toughest three-game stretches in the country in the past 10 days and ultimately got a 1-2 result, which many teams would settle for. After losing at UConn, the team went into a shootout on the road at Xavier and lost, 90-87. All five players were in double figures for Creighton, led by 25 points and seven assists from Baylor Scheierman. Guards Ryan Nembhard and Trey Alexander combined for 33 points in the backcourt.
The Bluejays’ next game was back at home against previously unbeaten (in Big East play) Providence. While the game wasn’t as high scoring, it certainly wasn’t less thrilling, with it being decided in the final minutes. This time around, Creighton was able to pull off the 73-67 win.
It was a trio of guys that led the way for the team, including 21 points and seven rebounds from Ryan Kalkbrenner. Alexander had 20 points, while Scheierman had 19 on 8/13 shooting. It’s impressive that they were able to win the game despite Nembhard going scoreless in 34 minutes on 0/7 shooting from the field.
Creighton looks to get on a winning streak this week, taking on both Butler and St. John’s. For a team that’s squarely on the bubble, they’ll need to go 2-0 and avoid a “bad” loss on its resume.
