NCAA Basketball: Kendric Davis, Antoine Davis headline Players of the Week
By Bryan Mauro
Power Conference Player of the Week – Kendric Davis
Well, there has now been a repeat winner in the Power 6 section as well. Davis wins the Busting Brackets player of the week award for the second time and if you watched him play this week you would understand why this was an easy choice. Sure, Filopowski from Duke had a nice week and it was a break out so to speak but Davis and his ability to change a game for Memphis are what sets him apart from everyone else.
The guard is a transfer from SMU where he developed a reputation as an elite scorer and stat sheet stuffer. He comes to Memphis, gets put into the spotlight, and is having the best season of his career. He has two thirty-point games this season as well as the 42-point scoring explosion against Central Florida. That game went to double overtime and it was the Kendric Davis show from the jump. He didn’t score that much from the floor but was able to get the line over 20 times which led to the huge scoring numbers.
The game against Temple, even though he didn’t score his normal output of points, may have been his best game of the season. He got hot down the stretch of that game and hit a tough off-balance runner from the corner with no time left on the clock to break the Owls heart. It was a tough shot that only a guy like Davis could pull off.
The 6’0” guard has never played in the NCAA tournament. Memphis should get to the tournament this year and if he continues to play like he is now the Tigers are going to make a run because their star guard is going to make sure they don’t go out easily. The small guard does so much for the Tigers and he seems to be what they were missing last year. Davis allows Memphis to do so many more things on offense and when he has the ball in his hands special things happen. He was Player of the Week for the second time but he is also well on his way to pushing for American conference Player of the Year as well. He did win the award last year at SMU.
That will do it for the Busting Brackets Player of the Week. Congratulations to Antoine Davis for one incredible career and it is sad to see it nearly coming to an end. Hopefully, the Titans can get right and win the Horizon League tournament. Congratulations are also in order for Kendric Davis of Memphis. I can not wait for him to play in the NCAA tournament and make some loud noise. Talk to you all again next week.
