NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga, Kansas drops, Duke, UNC rises in latest top 25 power ranking
3. Purdue Boilermakers – 18-1 (7-1 Big Ten)
It wasn’t the greatest offensive display for the Boilermakers this week, scoring 64 and 61 points respectively. But it was the defense that proved to be the most important factor for them, which is why they went 2-0 on the road.
In the first game at Michigan State, Purdue had to deal with a Spartans’ backcourt that was making shots all game. But in a battle where offense was sometimes hard to find, the Big Ten favorite still had the best player in NCAA Basketball. Zach Edey went for 32 points and 17 rebounds, including the game-winning hook shot to seal the 64-63 victory. Fletcher Loyer was the only other double-digit scorer on the night with 17 points on 5/9 shooting.
Even though they only scored 61 total points at Minnesota, it was more than enough for Purdue. They held the Gophers to just 12 points in the first half overall and 39 total in the game. Edey had 12 points and six rebounds, while freshman Braden Smith had 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in the win.
Purdue’s next two opponents should be able to put up a tougher challenge, taking on Maryland at home, followed up by a road battle at Michigan. The Wolverines, who are firmly on the NCAA Tournament, will be determined to get a signature victory on their resume.
