NCAA Basketball: Gonzaga, Kansas drops, Duke, UNC rises in latest top 25 power ranking
21. UConn Huskies – 15-5 (4-5 Big East)
At one point, the Huskies were the No. 2 team in NCAA Basketball and had a resume that arguably should’ve made them No. 1. But they’ve now lost five of six games, including four on the road. The first game was last Sunday against St. John’s at home. It was tied at 38 at halftime but the expectation was that the favorites would make a big run in the second half.
Instead, it was the Red Storm that made the move, scoring 47 points in the final 20 minutes to give UConn an 85-74 victory. It wasted a career-high 31 points from Jordan Hawkins, while Adama Sanogo had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Alex Karaban chipped in with 16 points but the 52% shooting from the field allowed was what did the Huskies in.
UConn tried to rebound against Seton Hall but once again, being on the road turns them into an average team. They were up by 14 points at halftime but the Pirates, who haven’t been great offensively. But the home team dropped 41 points in the second half compared to the Huskies’ 26 for a last-second 67-66 win. Sanogo had 16 points, while Hawkins produced 13 points and six rebounds.
The only thing keeping UConn in the rankings was the strong non-conference earlier on. But at this point, this team is anything but a top-25 caliber unit. They look to bounce back with games against Butler and Xavier at home.
