Big 12 Basketball: Buy or sell Kansas, Iowa State, Baylor, Texas and TCU?
TCU Horned Frogs
It’s been a while since the Frogs lost to Northwestern State at home to start the season and struggling in the non-conference. But those who were doubting them seemed to ignore the early injuries to Mike Miles and Emanuel Miller, as well as the NCAA-imposed suspension of point guard Damion Baugh to start the season.
All three have been back and playing at an All-Big 12 level, with Miles leading the team with 19.1 ppg. And the trio of key players has had some help, with four others averaging at least 7.0 ppg so far this season. They aren’t without their flaws, as TCU remains a poor three-point shooting team. They rank in the bottom in both attempts and makes and are 338th nationally at 30% 3PT.
But to the Frogs’ credit, they know what their strengths and weaknesses are. They rank in the top 25 at getting to the free throw line and in the top 15 nationally in two-point shots. It’s helped them get wins over Baylor and Kansas on the road and this veteran-laden team has the pieces to make a run in March.
TCU has the star needed in Miles, the coach in Jamie Dixon, and enough depth to win against any kind of team. And the fact that they don’t have to rely on the 3-ball means that a poor game in March won’t eliminate them from a game. They’re in great shape for a high seed and can easily make some noise in the Big Dance.
