Big 12 Basketball: Buy or sell Kansas, Iowa State, Baylor, Texas and TCU?
Texas Longhorns
In order to fully judge the Texas Longhorns, you have to look at them with Rodney Terry as the head coach. Chris Beard was recently fired after a domestic dispute and isn’t coming back. Coach Terry doesn’t have the greatest resume back in his days at UTEP and Fresno State but to his and the team’s credit, they haven’t fallen off since the change was made.
Texas has had as easy a recent schedule as the Big 12 can have, with four straight games against ranked opponents. That stretch will tell us how viable they are in March but based on the current resume, it’s hard to have an issue with anything they’ve done.
There were some questions as to how the backcourt would work out between Marcus Carr and incoming transfer Tyrese Hunter. It’s clear who runs the show, as Carr leads the team with 17.6 ppg and 4.3 apg. Carr has been solid, along with Sir’Jabari Rice coming off the bench. This is a team that can score, though they’re still a below-average shooting team.
Texas will go as Carr takes them and that could be a while. But the defense, which was supposed to be a strength, has been inconsistent at times. And I have my doubts that Terry can be the guy that can lead them to a deep run in March. Not everyone in the Big 12 will advance so if I have to pick one in danger of leaving early, I’ll go with the Longhorns.
