3. Rutgers Scarlet Knights – 14-7 (6-4)

Coming off a road loss at Michigan State, the Scarlet Knights were at home to take on one of the best players in Big Ten Basketball, Jalen Pickett, and Penn State. It was supposed to be a competitive battle but the top defense in the conference showed why it’s that way, winning 65-45.

The 45 points given up was the fewest for Rutgers since the 35 points given up to Columbia to open the season. They held the Nittany Lions to just 33% from the field and on offense had four players in double figures. Clifford Omoruyi had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way, while Paul Mulcahy had 12 points, five rebounds, and six assists.

As great as Rutgers’ defense was against Penn State, it was extreme the other way around against Iowa. It ended up being a shootout, with the team giving up a season-high 93 points in an 11-point defeat. Aundre Hyatt had 16 points off the bench to lead the team, while Mulcahy had 11 points and 13 assists.

We’ll see what kind of defense the Scarlet Knights pull off this week, taking on Minnesota at home before taking on Michigan State. Considering that they lost by 13 points two weeks ago to the Spartans, look for Rutgers to try and get some revenge.
