Big Ten Basketball power rankings: Indiana flies up, Michigan crashes down
7. Iowa Hawkeyes – 13-8 (5-5)
The two-game road trip against Ohio State and Michigan State did not go very well. They gave up 93 points in a loss to the struggling Buckeyes, which is a season-high on defense. And they followed it up with one of its worst scoring outputs of the season, losing 63-61 to the Spartans.
For his lofty standards, it was a poor game for Kris Murray, scoring just 11 points on 5/13 shooting and 0/5 from deep. His frontcourt partner Filip Rebraca had a better game, going for 16 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Aaron Ulis led all scorers with 17 on the night.
The Hawkeyes did find a way to rebound this past weekend against one of the best defenses in all of college basketball. They scored 45 points in the first half alone against Rutgers, before both squads nearly scored 50 in the second half in what turned out to be a shootout. But that’s Iowa’s game and they were comfortable going in that direction, eventually pulling out the 93-82 win. All eight players that played had at least seven points, led by 24 from Murray. Patrick McCaffery, who played in his first game in a month after dealing with personal issues, had nine points on 3/3 from deep.
With extra firepower, Iowa comes back home to take on two of the top teams in Big Ten Basketball, Northwestern, and Illinois. If they can pull out the sweep, the Hawkeyes could find themselves in the top four of the standings by the end of the week.
