NCAA Basketball Roundup: Duke wins rivalry clash, Gonzaga falls to Saint Mary’s
Kansas scores just 53 points in a loss at Iowa State
The offense for the Jayhawks has struggled in the past couple of weeks, before scoring 90 this week in a home win over Kansas State. But as they took one step forward, Kansas took one back on Saturday, where they scored 53 total points in 40 minutes, including just 21 in the first half.
Losing on the road at the Cyclones is by no means shameful. They’re a top-15 team who with a healthy Caleb Grill is a Final Four threat. But the problem is that Kansas, who is coming off a national championship itself, has shown signs that they aren’t a final weekend team.
Jalen Wilson, who has been the consistent star and leading scorer of the season, had 26 points and nine rebounds. The rest of the Jayhawks combined for 27 points on 9/28 shooting. That includes freshman Gradey Dick, who had seven points in 31 minutes played. And after scoring a combined 34 points in the win over Kansas State, Kevin McCullar and Dajuan Harris had just two points each in this game.
Far too many times has it been the Jalen Wilson show, with little else at times outside of Dick, who himself has been inconsistent with his scoring. This team doesn’t have many proven options offensively and the bench is non-existent with Joseph Yesufu isn’t giving them anything. It’s something to monitor going forward because if they can’t fit it, they won’t be going far in March.
