Bracketology 2023: UCLA, Kansas, and Creighton among week’s biggest winners
Mississippi State Bulldogs
When they had a five-game losing streak and started SEC play with a 1-7 record, Mississippi State wasn’t even viewed as an at-large threat. But when they won on the road at TCU in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, there was a glimmer of hope provided. Since then, they have taken complete advantage and won five straight overall.
This week, the Bulldogs beat LSU at home to avoid a bad Quad 3 loss. The final score was 64-53, thanks to 18 points from DJ Jeffries and 13 from Shakeel Moore. But the big game was at Arkansas, who got back former five-star prospect Nick Smith after being out over a month with an injury.
But Mississippi State wasn’t impressed, as they raced out to an early lead, one that they wouldn’t give up. They were able to pull off the massive 70-64 victory and Quad 1 resume-builder, led by 17 points from Dashawn Davis, one of four in double figures. It’s the third one of the season for them, making the Bulldogs a respectable 5-8 against Quad 1 and 2 opponents.
They can’t settle now, because there still is plenty of work to do for the resume of Mississippi State. That includes a massive matchup against Kentucky in a battle of bubble teams, along with a road game against Ole Miss on the weekend that could do big damage with a loss.
