20. San Diego State (20-5)

While a few of their conference rivals got the early publicity after some unbeaten starts, it’s been San Diego State who has asserted itself as the top dog in the Mountain West. A mixed bag of offensive talent and defensive efficiency has gotten the job done for the Aztecs, who kept on winning important games this week.

They got a key road win back on Wednesday, holding on for a 63-61 victory at Utah State. Matt Bradley had 18 points while Jaedon LeDee had a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds) off the bench. Over the weekend the Aztecs persevered again with a balanced offensive effort, getting an 82-71 win over UNLV. Adam Seiko had 18 points off the bench, Bradley put up 17 points, and the Aztecs shot 52% from the field, including twelve 3-pointers.

Other teams like Boise State and New Mexico have had their moments in the sun, but the MWC runs through the Aztecs as it currently stands. The preseason favorites are now 11-2 in conference play. Their defense has had some terrific outings and is working back near the tops in the nation in the defensive metrics. Next week’s only challenge is a road test at Fresno State, with the Aztecs holding at least a full game lead in the MWC race.
