St. John’s Red Storm

St. John’s isn’t in as dire a situation as Georgetown in that they’ve been at least competitive overall. But this is year 4 of the Mike Anderson era and they’re heading to the same results, which is around 17-15 overall and in the bottom-tier of the Big East standings once again.

Without any improvement, fans have grown restless and would prefer to move on. One name that has been mentioned before is Rick Pitino of Iona and former Louisville head coach. This year, he’s been effectively cleared of any potential sanctions during his time with the Cardinals, making it easier for a power conference program to hire him.

Of course, the potential buyout at Iona may make it an issue and St. John’s wouldn’t be the only one in pursuit. Coach Brey, who is another quality head coach and would be much cheaper to hire, is now another option to consider. He also has Big East success like Pitino and is familiar with being at a Catholic school.

And while Brey may hail from Maryland, his personality would be a nice fit in New York. He’s a tough but respected head coach that shouldn’t have an issue recruiting in the area as well. And if there’s a debate between Georgetown and St. John’s, the Red Storm doesn’t have the Thompson cloud (respectfully) in play when it comes to decision-making.
