NCAA Basketball: Midseason scouting notes and takeaways on 2023 NBA Draft prospects
Brice Sensabaugh- Ohio State – 6’6, 235 lbs – October 2003
Sensabaugh has been undeniably one of the most productive freshmen in the country, shooting it at 49/44/81 shooting splits. I doubt he is 6’6, probably closer to 6’4.
Sensabaugh was money against Northwestern, getting to his spots in the mid-range, and creating space on the perimeter. But, Illinois threw the much longer Coleman Hawkins at him, and Hawkins definitely caused some issues with his length.
I’d like to see Sensabaugh change his shot diet a bit and get to the rim more (as opposed to settling for tough two’s). He uses his wide frame to bump defenders off and go into fadeaways, but I think the next step would be using that size to bury into mismatches and punish smaller defenders who switch on him.
The biggest knock on his offensive profile right now is his low assist rate. Sensabaugh didn’t record an assist against Northwestern and I thought he missed some open reads. But I don’t think he is selfish or doesn’t know how to pass. I buy that it’s just more so that he can score incredibly easy right now.
Sensabaugh should still be able to score at the next level, even in a lower-usage role as a shooter. But I’ve cooled on him a bit lately. His best skills are all scoring-based and when he becomes a role player, what is he doing when he isn’t scoring? I’m not entirely sure. He isn’t a great defender or athlete. I still like him, just more so in the late teens and 20’s than in the lottery.
