Juwan Howard – Michigan Wolverines

In 2021, Coach Howard led Michigan to a 23-5 record and was named Big Ten Coach of the Year. His name was so hot that there were rumors of NBA teams being interested in his services. The two years that followed were rough, as the program is on track to have fewer than 20 wins in back-to-back years.

After being ranked No. 6 in the preseason in 2022, the Wolverines barely made the NCAA Tournament, squeaking in as an 11 seed. A Sweet 16 run did mask what was an underachieving season. In this current year, Michigan was a top-25 team that has fallen off the map, now 14-12 after losing to Wisconsin and not in the at-large picture, despite having an All-American caliber center in Hunter Dickinson on the roster.

There are also other factors such as his suspension after an altercation at the end of the game against the Badgers a year ago that drew wide criticism. There’s frustration and questions about whether it’s worth it to keep him around if the results are becoming stagnant.

That being said, firing a member of the “Fab 5” would be in poor taste after one bad year. But it’s not at 100% that he’s fully safe either if they crater even more and don’t finish .500 overall. If nothing else, it’ll put Coach Howard on the hot seat rankings next year.
