No. 2 Houston 24-2 (12-1) vs. Memphis 20-6 (10-3)

Sunday, February 19, Houston, TX, 3:00 PM ET, ESPN

There’s a big game in the American on Sunday afternoon when Memphis travels to Houston to take on the No. 2 Cougars. It’s getting down to crunch time for teams to make their statements to be a No. 1 seed and each game can be a swing game for those teams. Houston enters this game at 24-2, and with this being the first of their home-and-home with the Tigers, Memphis is the last chance for Houston to grab a quad 1 win to add to the five they have already amassed.

The metrics and the other resume numbers like the strength of schedule love Houston, but the biggest ding for them this season is that nine of their 24 wins are quad 4 wins, nearly as many as the first two quads combined. That could be a problem when being compared to others teams looking for a No. 1 seed.

Houston holds a two-game lead in the conference but it is the Tigers that sit right behind them. While a loss to Memphis would be the “best” loss Houston could take right now, they have fluctuated between the top two seed lines this season, and any loss could move them down a line. Memphis will be no pushover though because the Tigers are also fighting for their tournament lives right now and a win over the Cougars, especially on the road could solidify their spot in the field.
