Bracketology 2023: 8 teams in danger of sliding out of NCAA Tournament
North Carolina Tar Heels
The Tar Heels were the preseason No. 1 team in the country and were supposed to be a 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. But quickly on, it was clear that they were anything but the best, losing four straight games against good opponents to become unranked faster than anyone in history.
UNC remained floating above water over the next month but didn’t beat anyone meaningful. And after Ohio State fell apart, they don’t have a Quad 1 win on its resume. But the past few weeks featured a number of big opportunities to move the needle in a positive direction.
Unfortunately, that needle has moved oppositely. They’ve lost 5 of the 6 games, including to four of the top teams in the ACC. That’s Duke, Pittsburgh, Miami, and NC State. The lone victory was against Clemson, a team that’s already on this list for their recent fall.
After losing to the Wolfpack on Sunday, the Tar Heels are now 0-9 against Quad 1 opponents, the metrics aren’t going to save them now and they MUST beat Virginia and/or Duke to avoid having to win the ACC Tournament for the auto-bid. They’re set to truly make history in the next couple of weeks if things don’t improve but to this point, they’ve yet to beat a good team on the season.
