Bracketology 2023: 8 teams in danger of sliding out of NCAA Tournament
West Virginia Mountaineers
The Mountaineers aren’t in as dire a situation as Oklahoma, as they stand 15-12 on the season overall. They are 4-10 in Big 12 play but their metrics are outstanding, including a NET ranking of 32, even though it was at 23 before the home loss to Texas Tech.
West Virginia also had gotten some help in the non-conference, including a Quad 1 road win at Pittsburgh, a home win over Auburn, along with a neutral site win over Florida. The problem with the Gators is that star forward Colin Castleton broke his hand recently and they look like they might tank going forward.
The Mountaineers’ work in the Big 12 is also a bit misleading, as their best win is against Iowa State. They don’t have a win against one of the “Big 4” in Kansas, Baylor, Texas, and Kansas State. A win over any of them would be the signature victory to move them off the cut-line and they have opportunities to do so. Kansas and Iowa State are on the road, while the Wildcats rounding out the regular season.
But with a current three-game losing skid, West Virginia will need to beat Oklahoma State at home this week to get back on track. If they lose and can’t get a huge victory down the road, they could very well end up on the wrong side of the Bracketology bracket on Selection Sunday.
