Creighton Bluejays

The Bluejays were a preseason top-10 team to start the year but if you’ve been paying attention all season, you remember when they didn’t even have an NCAA Tournament resume. There was a really rough stretch for them around December, losing six straight games. That included at home to Nebraska, a neutral vs BYU, and a 3-3 start in Big East play that didn’t have any meaningful wins.

It’s important to note that they were without their best player, Ryan Kalkbrenner for a good portion of those games. The Co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year returned and immediately had an impact, helping them win 9 of the last 10 games before Tuesday night’s loss to Marquette. Wins included Providence, Xavier, and UConn.

Creighton is now 12-5 in league play and in position for a top-4 seed in the conference. And the Selection Committee certainly has respect for the Big East, giving both Xavier and Marquette top-16 over nods. What’s interesting is that the metrics love this team, currently with a top-15 NET ranking despite the 9-8 overall record against Quad 1/2 opponents.

If we’re basing it off of resume, Creighton might end up around the 6-8 seed range. But from a pure talent perspective when healthy, this looks like a top-4 seed in any region. They have no big games left in the regular season to make any moves so unless they win the conference tournament, they may end up with a seed that doesn’t reflect how good they’ve looked in the past two months.
