Texas A&M Aggies

For as much flack that the ACC has gotten this season, the SEC hasn’t been as good as advertised either. Their reputation is largely based on its top two teams, Alabama and Tennessee. Programs such as Kentucky, Florida, and Arkansas have underachieved a bit and the bottom (South Carolina, Ole Miss, and LSU) are really bad.

The league has struggled to the point where few have noticed a team currently tied at the top of the standings in the win column in Texas A&M. After the huge win over Tennessee on Tuesday night, this team has put itself in position to make the NCAA Tournament, which is an odd thing to say for a power conference team currently 13-2 in the standings.

The reason is that it’s a repeat of last season for the Aggies. They had an awful non-conference performance, including a pair of Quad 4 losses to both Murray State and Wofford. SMU and DePaul were in fact, their best wins before SEC play and they didn’t even get to face a Big 12 team in the Big 12/SEC Challenge this year.

But two wins over Auburn, a win over Missouri and now a signature win over Tennessee has them in really good position. And when Texas A&M gets its defense going, they’re a very difficult team to beat. With a top-30 NET ranking and favorable metrics across the board, don’t be surprised if they find a way to get a 5/6 seed, despite the bad losses.
