NCAA Basketball: Picking winner of each conference tournament for 2022-23 season
By Bryan Mauro
SEC
Dates: March 8th-12th
Bridgestone Arena
Top Seed: Alabama Crimson Tide
Winner: Kentucky Wildcats
There is no one hotter in the SEC right now than Kentucky. The Wildcats were another blue blood that struggled at the beginning of the year but has figured it out as the year winds down. Kentucky is too talented to be down for too long. They also want to prove that Coach Calipari is the right coach for the job in Lexington. Oscar Tshiebwe is the reigning National Player of the Year and he decided to come back to Kentucky where now he leads the team in points and rebounds and is one of the best players in the entire country. Kentucky has figured this out right in time for the conference tournament.
Coach Calipari has made a ton of adjustments to this roster as the season was spiraling a bit but with some lineup changes and philosophy and that has really sparked the run. Did we all think Kentucky was not going to make it? The adjustments made by the coaching staff to fill some voids seem to have worked. The Wildcats are the hottest team in the SEC, and they also have the most talent in the league so it should come as no surprise when they win the league. Kentucky should win the tournament if they play well.
Sleeper: Vanderbilt Commodores
Head coach Jerry Stackhouse has gotten things rolling to an extent at Vanderbilt. They have now guaranteed themselves a winning record overall and in SEC play. The wining record in the conference is a first for the Commodores under head coach Jerry Stackhouse. Vanderbilt has been the ultimate spoiler the last two weeks of the season and they have gone from no postseason hopes to a bubble team with a few more good wins in the conference tournament.
Over the last two weeks, the Commodores have beaten Tennessee and Auburn. They also have a win over Arkansas. They do have good wins and they are playing very well right now. The Commodores are out of the first day of the tournament which will give them a much easier path to make a run. Liam Robbins is well-traveled and is playing at an extremely high level over this run for the Commodores. Vanderbilt is dangerous in the SEC tournament.
