NCAA Basketball: 10 teams with upset potential in 2023 NCAA Tournament
By Joey Loose
Kent State
As things currently stand, Kent State sits in 2nd place in the MAC, trailing a Toledo team that they beat by double-digits over a month ago. We won’t focus on the Rockets today, but they’re a dangerous offensive team as well. These Golden Flashes, if they can get into the Big Dance have the potential for a serious run because of their shot-making and star power.
Depending on a potential matchup in the NCAA Tournament, Sincere Carry might be the best player on the court in their game. He’s a very talented point guard who can score buckets and distribute the ball, averaging 16.8 points and 4.9 assists a game so far this season. Additionally, you have to worry about fellow guard Malique Jacobs, who’s putting up similar numbers. Miryne Thomas is their best 3-point shooter while underrated players like Chris Payton and Cli’Ron Hornbreak are quietly putting together very efficient performances.
If you want a reason to be scared of Kent State, just consider that during conference play they lost by just 5 points at Houston and 7 points at Gonzaga, with incredible defensive efforts in both games. These Golden Flashes show up when it matters the most, and even with three losses in MAC play have proven that the offense can support the defense. Carry hasn’t had the best shooting season himself, but there are enough pieces on this roster to make a 3 or 4 seed extremely uncomfortable in the Tournament. You can be Gonzaga and Houston still remember the effort this Kent State team gave three months ago.
