Bracketology 2023: Complete Bubble Watch before final weekend of regular season
By Joey Loose
Arizona State: 20-10 (11-8 in Pac-12) NET: 63
Bobby Hurley’s team got off to an 11-1 start to the season, a run that included impressive wins over Michigan and Creighton, two wins that have their resume in solid shape. A road sweep against the Oregon schools in mid-January got the Sun Devils to 15-3, but this team has struggled over the last month. Their 11-8 mark in the Pac-12 is not as good as it seems and that NET is a bit lower than many of the other bubble teams.
Arizona State got a major boost last weekend with that buzzer-beating road win at rival Arizona, but can that along get them into the NCAA Tournament? This team has had some really rough performances, including a blowout loss at San Francisco and a Quad 4 defeat against Texas Southern early in the season. Their NET sat at 22 before that loss to the Dons. The 4 Quad 1 wins look nice, but there’s still work ahead in Tempe.
Right now, Lunardi has Arizona State as the first team out of the NCAA Tournament. Without that shocker against Arizona, the Sun Devils’ position would be considerably direr, though they didn’t help matters with a rough Thursday loss at UCLA. Their final chance before the conference tournament is a road game at USC. We’re at the point where the Sun Devils will likely need to win at least one more game against the top echelon of teams in the Pac-12 to secure their spot in the Big Dance.
