Texas Longhorns

Entering Saturday, there were three teams with at least 10 Quad 1 wins on the season. One is Kansas, which is vying for the top overall spot in the NCAA Tournament. The others were Baylor and Texas. And after the Longhorns lost to the Bears last weekend, it looked as if they were the team most likely to crash the 1 seed party that includes Houston, Alabama, and Purdue.

After losing to TCU on the road earlier this week, it looked as if Texas had no shot to get there. But several things happened in their favor after Tuesday that reopened the door. Alabama lost a game, as well as Baylor got blown out by Iowa State on Saturday. The Longhorns, were at home against Big 12 regular-season champion Kansas, in a chance for another signature victory.

Texas was able to beat the No. 3 team in the country, 75-59. Despite just one starter being in double figures, they got 20 points from Tyrese Hunter and 23 off the bench from Sir-Jabari Rice in order to get the victory and another Quad 1 victory.

With an 11-8 record against Quad 1 opponents and no losses elsewhere, plus the non-con wins over both Gonzaga and Creighton, it’s a resume worthy of being a 1-seed. They might not have it right now but this win over Kansas at least put Texas back in contention ahead of the Big 12 Tournament.
