NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 68 head coaches in 2023 NCAA Tournament
By Joey Loose
32. T. J. Otzelberger – Iowa State
3 NCAA Tournaments (2-3)
A native of Milwaukee, Otzelberger has had the best days of his career at Iowa State, where he’s in his second season as head coach. He had two separate stints as a Cyclones assistant and was head coach at both South Dakota State and UNLV, leading the Jackrabbits to a pair of NCAA Tournaments. His first season at Iowa State saw major strides and a surprise run to the Sweet Sixteen and Otzelberger is looking to keep up that momentum this postseason.
31. Steve Alford – Nevada
11 NCAA Tournaments (11-11)
After starring at Indiana and playing four years in the NBA, Alford got his head coaching career going at Manchester in his home state of Indiana. He’s been a head coach for more than 30 years, taking Missouri State to a Sweet Sixteen run, Iowa to decent success, New Mexico to three more Tourney bids, and a trio of Sweet Sixteen’s in six years at UCLA. Nevada brought him to Reno in 2019 and he’s just made his first trip to the Big Dance with the Wolf Pack. It’s an impressive feat to lead five different D1 programs to the NCAA Tournament.
30. Kevin Willard – Maryland
5 NCAA Tournaments (1-5)
A former college point guard at Pittsburgh, Willard was on Rick Pitino’s staffs with both Louisville and the Boston Celtics before beginning his head coaching career at Iona. His greatest years to this point came during a 12-year stint at Seton Hall, taking the Pirates to five NCAA Tournament bids, including four in a row. In his first season at Maryland, Willard has the Terrapins back in the Big Dance and has this program trending in a better direction.
29. Brian Dutcher – San Diego State
3 NCAA Tournaments (0-3)
Dutcher has been part of a lot of winning in his coaching career, spending nearly three decades as an assistant under Steve Fisher, starting with the Michigan team that won the national title in 1989. He’s led the Aztecs since 2017 to begin his head coaching career and has maintained their role as the top program in the MWC. While he’s still hunting for his first Tournament win, Dutcher led the Aztecs to a third MWC Tournament title this year after a third regular season title, with a .760 winning percentage overall.
