NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 68 head coaches in 2023 NCAA Tournament
By Joey Loose
28. Andy Enfield – USC
5 NCAA Tournaments (7-5)
A former NBA shooting coach, Enfield got his collegiate career started on Leonard Hamilton’s Florida State staff before beginning a prosperous head coaching career. He’s certainly well-known for leading Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet Sixteen as a 15-seed back in 2013. The last decade has seen Enfield building up USC and he’ll make a third straight trip to the Big Dance this season, hoping to replicate the success of 2021’s surprise run to the Elite Eight.
27. Dan Hurley – Connecticut
4 NCAA Tournaments (2-4)
It’s been a prosperous decade for Hurley, a former Seton Hall point guard who was a successful high school coach before beginning his collegiate career at Wagner in 2010. He maneuvered success with the Seahawks and also in six years led Rhode Island, taking the Rams to a pair of first-round wins in the NCAA Tournament. Connecticut brought him aboard in 2018 and the results speak for themselves, with three straight trips to the Big Dance and three straight solid seasons since the Huskies returned to the Big East; though he hasn’t won a Tourney game yet at Connecticut.
26. Fran McCaffery – Iowa
11 NCAA Tournaments (6-11)
A successful coaching career has already seen McCaffery lead four different programs to the NCAA Tournament. He got the job done at Lehigh and UNC Greensboro and even took Siena to a pair of first-round wins in the Big Dance. He’s been firmly entrenched at Iowa since 2010 and is leading the Hawkeyes to a fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance this season. The only downside is that he’s never reached the second weekend of the Big Dance, hoping to change that in his seventh trip at Iowa.
25. Randy Bennett – Saint Mary’s
8 NCAA Tournaments (5-8)
After 16 years as a D1 assistant at four different schools, including a few other stops in the WCC, Bennett has really found a home at Saint Mary’s. He’s been with the Gaels since 2001 and has done incredible work to keep this program in the position it’s in, right behind Gonzaga in this league. He led Saint Mary’s to a Sweet Sixteen in 2010, has made a plethora of bids, and won a Tournament game just last season. Even though Saint Mary’s fell to Gonzaga in the WCC Tournament, Bennett has this team ready to make its mark.
