NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 68 head coaches in 2023 NCAA Tournament
By Joey Loose
52. Bob Richey – Furman
0 NCAA Tournaments
There may be a major conference job that steals Richey away in the coming years, but you can bet he’s elated that Furman has finally broken their long drought, winning the SoCon Tournament title and making the Big Dance for the first time since 1980. He’s been with the Paladins since 2011, with the last six years as head coach, and has won a boatload of games with this program. At just 39 years old, Richey has a bright future ahead and a talented mid-major program on his hands.
51. Mike Rhoades – VCU
2 NCAA Tournaments (0-1)
After thirteen years at Randolph-Macon, including 10 as head coach, Rhoades’ introduction to D1 basketball was on Shaka Smart’s VCU staff, including for that surprise run to the Final Four. He spent three years leading a turnaround at Rice before heading back to VCU as head coach back in 2017. Rhoades just led the Rams to the A-10 Tournament to get into the Big Dance for a third time, though they were forced to forfeit their last trip due to pandemic issues in 2021.
50. Chris Collins – Northwestern
1 NCAA Tournament (1-1)
A former Illinois Mr. Basketball three decades ago, Collins has brought good basketball to Northwestern for the first time in the Wildcats’ history. A former guard and longtime assistant at Duke under Coach K, Collins’ first head coaching job has been these last ten years leading the Wildcats, taking them to their first NCAA Tournament ever back in 2017. Six years later, Northwestern is back and even better than that team, finishing 2nd in the Big Ten and hoping for more March magic.
49. Matt Langel – Colgate
3 NCAA Tournaments (0-3)
Prior to becoming a successful head coach, Langel was a player and assistant under Fran Dunphy at both Penn and Temple and was part of numerous postseason appearances in that time. Hired by Colgate in 2011, things got off to a slow start but Langel has built Colgate into the Patriot League’s top program. They’ve won four of the last five Patriot League Tournament titles and will be heading to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament, with hopes to actually pull that elusive upset this time around.
