NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 68 head coaches in 2023 NCAA Tournament
By Joey Loose
48. Jeff Capel III – Pittsburgh
3 NCAA Tournaments (4-3)
Things might be finally coming together for Capel at Pittsburgh if this season is evidence. A former Duke guard back in the 90’s, Capel got into coaching under his father and had successful stints leading VCU and Oklahoma, taking the Sooners and Blake Griffin to the Elite Eight in 2009. Capel spent nearly a decade on Coach K’s staff after Oklahoma didn’t work out and was hired by Pittsburgh in 2018. After a really rough first few years, his Panthers have exceeded expectations and find themselves in the Big Dance for the first time in 7 years.
47. Micah Shrewsberry – Penn State
0 NCAA Tournaments
Before beginning his D1 head coaching career with these Nittany Lions, Shrewsberry bounced around a number of places, spending his career mostly in the state of Indiana. He had two separate stints on Matt Painter’s Purdue bench and was an aide to Brad Stevens both with the Boston Celtics and at Butler during their two title-game runs. However, his work at Penn State this season has been otherworldly, leading the Nittany Lions back to the Big Dance for the first time in a dozen years.
46. Kevin Keatts – NC State
3 NCAA Tournaments (0-3)
Keatts had a successful coaching tenure at the high school level and “won” a national title as an assistant at Louisville before beginning his collegiate head coach career at UNC Wilmington. He won a pair of CAA titles with the Seahawks, leading that mid-major to two straight NCAA Tournaments. Keatts has been at NC State since 2017 and led the Wolfpack to the Big Dance in his first season, but this is their first trip in five years and he’s still looking for his first postseason victory.
45. Bobby Hurley – Arizona State
3 NCAA Tournaments (1-3)
Hurley starred as a point guard at Duke and won a pair of national championships before an NBA career in the 90’s. He got into coaching on brother Dan’s staffs for a few years before Buffalo gave him his first head coaching job. After taking the Bulls to an NCAA Tournament, he was hired by Arizona State and has been with the Sun Devils for three years, taking them to the First Four for a third time in his career.
