NCAA Tournament 2023: Ranking the starting lineups of each Sweet 16 team
By Joey Loose
4. Alabama (1-seed)
Charles Bediako (Sophomore – Center)
Alabama’s starting big man for two years now, Bediako put up decent numbers in averaging 6.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game this year. He was named to the SEC’s All-Defense team and lead the conference in 2-point field goal percentage as well. He’s been playing some of his basketball down the stretch, with a 12-point, 13-rebound performance in the SEC title game last week and another double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) in their second-round victory over Maryland on Saturday.
Noah Clowney (Freshman – Forward)
Clowney has certainly played a major role in his first collegiate season for the Crimson Tide. Considered a Top 100 recruit, he’s put up 10.0 points and 7.9 rebounds a game and finished right behind Bediako for shooting percentage this season. An SEC All-Freshman honoree as one of the SEC’s top rebounders, Clowney just had a 10-point effort in Alabama’s opening-round win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and grabbed 9 boards in game two.
Brandon Miller (Freshman – Forward)
Miller has certainly lived up to his billing as a prospect. Named a First Team All-American while also claiming SEC Player of the Year honors, he’s averaging 19.1 points and 8.2 rebounds to lead the Crimson Tide into this envious position, topping the conference in 3-point field goals as well. Miller’s strong performances have continued, emerging for a 19-point, 7-rebound effort against Maryland after being held scoreless in the opening round of the Tournament.
Jahvon Quinerly (Senior – Guard)
He was named SEC Sixth Man of the Year, but Quinerly has worked his way into Alabama’s starting lineup in the postseason, averaging 8.7 points and 3.6 assists as a valuable and experienced member of this backcourt. Quinerly had 22 points in their SEC championship win over Texas A&M and repeated that feat in the second-round win against Maryland; the former Villanova guard is playing excellent basketball in March.
Mark Sears (Junior – Guard)
After two dynamic years at Ohio, Sears joined Alabama this season and has averaged 12.4 points and 3.4 rebounds for the Crimson Tide. While he’s not quite matching the numbers he put up last year as the MAC’s top scorer, Sears has been an important weapon on this Crimson Tide lineup, with a 15-point performance on Thursday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to help kickstart Alabama’s Tournament run.
