NCAA Basketball: Reevaluating preseason top 25 power rankings of 2022-23 season

14. TCU (22-13, 6-seed, Round of 32)
Expectations were sky-high for the Horned Frogs after the way last season ended. They took top-seed Arizona to overtime in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year and returned virtually all of their rotation this year, including the entire starting lineup. Mike Miles Jr. has been a rising star and coach Jamie Dixon has slowly built his alma mater into a competing basketball program, though things didn’t turn out exactly as expected this year.
The Horned Frogs got off to an abysmal start to the year, losing a home game to Northwestern State early in the season after struggling with a few other low-major programs. TCU got back on track in time for Big 12 play and scored January road wins over Baylor and Kansas that helped turn the tide on their season. Unfortunately, they were forced to play for a few weeks without Miles and their season took a hit, including a tough 4-game losing streak in early February. After losing to Texas in the Big 12 Tournament, the Horned Frogs were granted a 6-seed despite already having 12 losses, having survived the nation’s top conference.
TCU scored a tight win over Arizona State in the first round before falling late to Gonzaga in round two. It was another game that the Horned Frogs might win if a few things go a different way, something that seemed to describe their season. This Horned Frogs team was more talented than their record indicated, even with that tough schedule in the Big 12. Even after returning 92% of their scoring from last year, TCU couldn’t advance further in the Big Dance and have some questions moving forward with holes to fill on this roster.
