Big East Basketball: Ranking all 11 head coaches after Pitino/English hires
By Joey Loose
4. Sean Miller – Xavier
A point guard at Pittsburgh more than three decades ago, it’s already been quite the coaching career for Miller. After serving on the staffs of several schools, including a run at NC State, Miller began his head coaching career at Xavier way back in 2004, leaving five years later to take over at Arizona. Miller was fired by the Wildcats after twelve seasons and just returned last season to Xavier, beginning his second head coaching stint with the Musketeers.
Miller won three A-10 titles and led Xavier to the Elite Eight way back in 2008. While the back end of his tenure was unsuccessful, he took Arizona to three Elite Eight’s, two Sweet Sixteen’s and had one of the best programs in the nation for a while. Back with the Musketeers again, his initial season back was certainly a success, getting Xavier back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five seasons with a 2nd place finish in the Big East and a run to the Sweet Sixteen.
Miller has led a team to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament on eight occasions, though he hasn’t gotten over the hump and made the Final Four. That being said, his return to Xavier is evidence of the good he has done and will continue to do with this Musketeers program. Xavier has been rather lame in recent years, but an experienced lineup with Miller’s leadership had great results during this 27-win season.
