Big Ten Basketball: 10 key storylines to watch for 2023 offseason
10. Nebraska and Fred Hoiberg look to build off of solid season
In a surprising twist, Nebraska was actually on the bubble towards the end of the regular season after a big run to get over .500. They fell short, finishing 16-16 (9-11) on the year. It was easily the best campaign yet for head coach Fred Hoiberg, who was getting closer to the hot seat after a combined record of 24-67 in the first three years.
They were led by Keisei Tominaga, the sharpshooting junior who has a huge shooting streak in Big Ten Basketball play and averaged 13.1 ppg. He hasn’t entered the portal yet and very well could come back and the Cornhuskers need him to for any chance at competitive next season.
Two players that won’t be back are 5th-year seniors, Derrick Walker and Sam Griesel. They were the team’s two other double-digit scorers on the roster. There are a few other key rotation pieces that can come back in CJ Wilcher, Juwan Gary and Emmanuel Bandoumel, along with freshmen Jamarques Lawrence and Sam Hoiberg.
It’s a core that’s solid but they need to find a couple other key pieces, including one with all-league potential in the Big Ten. They’ve done enough this past season to get intruge but will have to capitalize off of it in the coming weeks, or risk going back to the bottom of the conference.
