Big Ten Basketball: 10 key storylines to watch for 2023 offseason
8. Penn State looks to move on without Micah Shrewsberry
It’s been over a decade since the last time Penn State made the NCAA Tournament. But in just the second season on the job, former Purdue assistant Shrewsberry led the Nittany Lions to the Big Dance after a late charge. They were on of the most entertaining teams in the country thanks to an offense, led by All-American Jalen Pickett, that shot more three-pointers than just about any team in the country.
The coaching carosel was in on Shrewsberry, with reportedly Georgetown interested. In the end, Notre Dame, who was without longtime head coach Mike Brey, made the move to hire the Penn State leader. It made sense since he’s from the state of Indiana and has a chance to shake things up in the ACC.
For Penn State, they now have to start over again. Reportedly, they’re looking at Mike Rhoades, the head coach at VCU who just led his team to the NCAA Tournament. If that hire is made, his coaching style is closer to Steve Pikell of Rutgers, a hard-nose defense and slower paced style overall, a complete 180 than what the Nittany Lions were these past two years.
Whoever the coach is will have to rebuild the entire roster. All of the seniors are moving on, including Pickett, Seth Lundy, Andrew Funk, Cam Wynter, and Myles Dread. No one who produced more than 3.5 ppg is coming back so expect a lot of turnover. Penn State will have to go back to the drawing board and hope for another successful hire.
